Fear of Failure and Embarrassment

For individuals contemplating a future in real estate investment, or any activity that strays from the dreary mold of mediocre existence, fear of failure is one of the greatest obstacles they face.

When we say that we are “afraid of failure” we are making a broad generalization that glosses over the things that truly worry us.  This fear is paralyzing, and yet, because of its nonspecific and meaningless nature, we struggle to defeat it.

The fear of failure is a vague term that encompasses a broad range of dread and apprehension.   The key to beating it lies in recognizing each of its component terrors, and overcoming them one-by-one.

I want to take a moment to address one of the actual, specific fears included in this pantheon: it is the fear of embarrassment and humiliation.  For many, the fear of losing face in front of others – of being mocked for attempting to achieve something of great importance – is a powerful paralytic.

Consider the true purpose of fear: it is a biological response stimulated by the perception of threat, and enables us to avoid situations or activities that could endanger our lives.  And yet, this important mechanism can be warped to create panic and terror over things that offer no true threat or danger.  Such is the case with our fear of embarrassment.

Has anyone ever died of embarrassment?  Perhaps.  I suppose one could find an example of an individual so overcome with the intense emotions of shame and humiliation that a physical response, such as a heart attack, actually occurred.  Yet, I imagine that these circumstances are rare.  Furthermore, they are entirely the product of the mind; they threaten us only because we believe they can threaten us.

This fear of looking foolish stifles our drive and creative energy.   We wait for others – perhaps friends and family – to give us permission to attempt something new.  We pause, and wait for another to traverse the untested trail, hoping they will validate our belief that treasure is waiting at the end; in so doing we forfeit our claim to the prize we intuitively sensed was available.

If you were freed from the shackles of shame and embarrassment, what could you do that you are not currently doing?  Would your decisions be easier, and your view clearer, if outside opinion was irrelevant to your thinking?  How much of your daily routine is determined not by your own desires, but your wish to avoid the critical eye of your peers?

When we learn to recognize the illusory nature of the threat of embarrassment, the windows of possibility will open to us.  Among the fears that contribute to our dread of failure, this is among the greatest.  The peace and confidence you will achieve by relinquishing this unnecessary burden are well worth the effort.

Walking the Talk

Every Monday morning we have a company-wide meeting here at the home office where we talk about upcoming events, progress on current projects, hot topics, and many other forms of company business.

One of the most interesting items covered in the meeting, to myself as the new guy, is called “Good News Minute”. Anyone in attendance has the opportunity to share with everyone else what is going on in their lives. Invariably, someone will talk about progress being made towards building up their own real estate portfolio, whether they are in the process of finding homes that fit the REIC standard, closing on one or multiple homes for purchase, or closing a rent-to-own contract.

Everyone uses Kris Krohn’s Straight path strategies to find and finish these real estate deals. All that tells me is that the system not only worked for Kris when he developed it. It is working today for anyone willing to walk the Straight Path.

Outside The Box

Yesterday my 18-year old son, Sam, called me from home to say “Mom, while cooking a smoke-bomb on the kitchen stove I let it heat up too long and it exploded. The good news is that everything in the kitchen is o.k. – the bad news is when my spoon caught fire, I threw it into the living room and there is now a spoon-shaped burn on the sofa.” After wiping away my tears of laughter, I asked him what he learned from the episode, and he answered “next time my spoon catches fire, throw it towards the sink.” When was the last time you did something outside the box? The greatest satisfaction I get from working at REIC is we create solutions by refusing to say “it can’t be done” and finding a way to create success for clients, when others give up. So keep going, keep looking, and create your own amazing destiny!

Why hesitate to be great?

So many of us hesitate to be great, yet it is what we say we really want. The problem is that when what we say we want isn’t coinciding with what we are getting or creating then we should reevaluate if those two things are really aligned. The truth is, we are getting what we want the most. If I am sitting down and watching television rather work on a business plan, then that is what I want more. If I play on the computer rather than getting the message out about what my passions are, then I am obviously more passionate about spending the time on the computer. The trend that I have seen is that all too often we preach about all that we want in life and what we want to accomplish but are then unwilling to do what it takes to get it… we talk big, but then don’t have the drive to back it up. So the question that I have for you is:

When are you going to decide to break the pattern and do something different, something great?

• You are the one that will have to ask for your next raise.
• You will decide whether or not you will wake up early to get that job done or sleep in.
• You will decide on the goals you want to set and if you are going to achieve them.

If you don’t realize anything else I hope you realize this. No one else is going to do these things for you. So if you really want them, then go out and get them. Decide if these goals are higher on your priority list than those other things that you waste your time with, and then get to work.

Remember, It is always up to you!

Teaching finances at an early age

2003827079 Teaching finances at an early ageSo we talk a lot at REIC about what to do for your retirement and the broken financial paradigm. A lot of people we come in contact with are already grown-ups! They have families, kids, grandkids and a few are getting ready to retire. We commend you for taking the steps to become financially liberated and for working hard with us to make a better life for your family and to put you in a position to help your community. But, when the day comes when your kids grow up, what did you teach them about money? Will they be as smart as you are now, with real estate portfolios and smart investments? What did they learn from your experience with REIC?

In the Education section of The Seattle Times, Jolayne Houtz wrote an article, “Teaching your kids about money.” Now, we don’t have a real estate for kids at REIC just yet, so the financial coaching for your children is up to you.  Houtz wrote, “there’s never been a more important time for children to learn about managing money. If Americans’ crushing debt loads and rising bankruptcy rates among young adults aren’t convincing, consider this: Many college administrators believe credit-card debt leads more to dropouts than academic failure.” YIKES! All that money you are putting into your kids’ college tuitions…think about it? Financial literacy isn’t something they teach in schools. She goes on to say that “parents are mostly on their own to tackle a subject that many find at least as hard to talk about as sex or drugs. Because that discussion isn’t just about dollars and cents. It’s about teaching kids values and personal responsibility.”

So, even though we don’t have a Real Estate Made For Kids program yet, we do have excellent coaching programs that train our clients in developing the right mindsets for investing and for life. Hopefully, what you learn with us, you can pass along to your younger generation.

Human Capital: Our most valuable asset

My dad passed away almost a year ago, and the most memorable saying I will ever remember from him is “nothing is worth hard feelings.” As a politician, an ambassador, a lawyer, a banker, and a church leader; he never looked at the goal as more important than the people involved in the process. Somehow, he was able to live up to this near-impossible ideal, and I think the magic potion he used was emotional self-discipline. When we begin feeling pressure and are tempted to blame someone for it, or dump our frustrations on the people around us, stop and remember that there are NO insignificant people, ever. When we truly value each person as unique and worthy of our esteem, then we can develop the strength to express our regard, and solve the issues, instead of looking for blame. At REIC, our culture embraces this ideal, and as we learn to truly live it, the organization and its people are a joy to work with. Thanks, Dad, for being my ultimate example.

True Authenticity

Of all the REIC advertising slogans, one has always stood out for me: “REIC, the authentic experience.” As an REIC employee and customer, I am amazed at how perfectly this company embodies the core ethic of authenticity. This ethic has driven REIC’s remarkable growth and success over the last few years.

REIC is unique in its commitment to help individuals purchase real estate. Rather than provide you with a few coaching sessions or a boot camp, we actually work with you step-by-step. We help you locate great real estate deals and qualify for the financing you need. In this way, the REIC investment experience is indeed authentic; we truly help you to buy investment property.

But there is much more to this slogan. REIC has had a powerful impact on the lives of hundreds of families, including those of its own employees. Most REIC employees have been recruited from the pool of REIC customers. Everyone who works for REIC has their own unique story, and could tell you how REIC has blessed them personally. Whether it’s our program for purchasing local real estate, or our national program for buying REO’s at enormous discounts, we are proud to be fellow real estate investors!

Whenever you speak to members of the REIC team, don’t be afraid to ask them about their personal story. You’ll be surprised at how willing they are to share their experiences – some of them quite powerful and personal. These stories will uplift and inspire you; above all, you will come to understand how authentic the REIC experience truly is. I hope we have the chance to share our experiences with you, and perhaps help you to create a few of your own.

The Almighty Dollar

I marvel, so often, at the sheer stupidity of Americans when it comes to our money. I can say that because I am an American that so often does really stupid things when it comes to money. We all spend our lives chasing the almighty dollar, so that once we get a few of ‘em we can enter into stress induced sweaty convulsions when we begin to think of spending or losing it. Seriously, think about it. When we don’t have money we are so fearful that we don’t have it that we will do anything to get it . . . Steal, cheat, lie, work 3 jobs and abandon our families, spend a bunch of dollars we don’t have buying crap we don’t need so that we feel we have it. We do the most inane things with our dollars. We keep doing the same crap always expecting different results, different outcomes, and then we get mad that we don’t experience different results, and figure that since nothing has EVER worked before, why try anything different. According to Einstein we are literally nutso. So we live our lives filled with fear of money, becoming victim to the ruthless dictator of ink-stained paper with dead Presidents on it. Think of how silly that is, yet we all engage in it all the time. Why is that, why do we allow our lives to be ruled by the dollar? Now, what about the opposite end of the spectrum? What about once we have some dollars in hand? Now we become slaves to the dollars we finally have in our sweaty little palms, that we have tucked away under the mattress, that we have deposited in the bank, that we have purchased a CD (not the music kind) with . . . now we become fearful that we will lose the dollars once we finally have them. THE AMOUNT OF DOLLARS (or lack thereof) IS NOT YOUR PROBLEM, WE ARE OUR OWN PROBLEM. You see it doesn’t matter if we are rich, poor, wealthy, or impoverished. If we haven’t gotten clear on the purpose of dollars, we will NEVER have enough of them!! So what is the key, what is the trick? Check out this video where I go into more depth . . .

How Big is Your Sea of Humanity?

SO often in life we are searching for ways to make a little extra money. I have an easy opportunity for everyone to make an extra several thousand dollars. REIC has launched a new affiliate program as part of our business developer program. Last week Kevin Clayson made a contact with a gentleman that has a database of over 11,000 leads and has agreed to let Kevin or I should say REIC market to them. This database will produce tens of thousands of dollars in extra income this year for Kevin.

Together we are all connected. You know someone who knows someone who know…everyone. All the resources we need to be successful is are found within the person you are eating lunch with today or meet while walking the dog.

Likewise, accelerating your game plan to make millions in real estate is simple. You need three ingredients to make a million dollars…

1. Someone to do the work

2. Someone with a job and credit

3. Someone with money for a down payment

However, you don’t personally need ALL of these resources to be successful as we so often believe. You need none of them to make the money. You simply need to organize the resources to create more wealth all around for everyone involved. Every one of us knows someone who has one or more of these resources. Put them together and you have the makings of a successful business through REIC’s Strait Path System.

If you’re an excellent connector and know how to tap into your sea of humanity then you to have the tools to create wealth.

How REIC is helping the millions of unemployed…or at least a few hundred for now.

So the economy is slowly recovering, just a little bit. The government’s economic stimulus plan is starting to do just that–stimulate the economy. But while things are starting to pick up and a little bit of light is creeping in, there’s still a ton of Americans, who are unemployed. Just because the economy is showing sparse signs of life, doesn’t mean the millions of Americans who’ve lost their jobs the past couple of years, will magically get an employment invitation from their old companies. BLOG Reic Employment Help1 240x300 How REIC is helping the millions of unemployed...or at least a few hundred for now.

This past Saturday (February 20th), The New York Times published an article titled, “The New Poor: Millions of Unemployed Face Years Without Jobs.” Peter Goodman wrote that “Even as the American economy shows tentative signs of a rebound, the human toll of the recession continues to mount, with millions of Americans remaining out of work, out of savings and nearing the end of their unemployment benefits. Economists fear that the nascent recovery will leave more people behind than in past recessions, failing to create jobs in sufficient numbers to absorb the record-setting ranks of the long-term unemployed…Yet the social safety net is already showing severe strains. Roughly 2.7 million jobless people will lose their unemployment check before the end of April unless Congress approves the Obama administration’s proposal to extend the payments, according to the Labor Department.”

Man! Those are some heavy stats. Heavy, negative-sounding stats.

Now where does REIC comes in? Well, we’ve just launched our Business Developer program. This program is a great way for build a side business or serve as a replacement career like stay-at-home parents who want to help earn income for their families can or individuals who have recently lost their jobs. REIC has provided lots of tools (including personal websites, access to REIC resources, etc)  for each business developer. Now, this program isn’t going to solve the nation’s unemployment statistics overnight, over 100 nights or probably over 10,000 nights! However, it is a proactive step to helping improve the current economy and putting hard-working Americans back in the workforce.
